It Is Never Too Early To Get Your Head Ready For Retirement

A friend of mine decided to take an early retirement at the age of 50. He sold his company and put a bucket of money in the bank. Life was going to be great. He and his wife were going to travel and spend the rest of their lives foot loose and fancy-free. I talked to him the other day and he is three years into his retirement and he feels like a rudderless ship. He and his wife did everything they ever wanted to do. They travelled, saw the world and experienced life to the fullest. They have exhausted their bucket list and are now just going through the motions. The last three years seemed like a long vacation that is now over. Their problem, like many of us, was they were not mentally prepared for retirement. There is lots being discussed and published these days on retirement. The need for financial preparation for retirement. The uncertainty of financial preparation for retirement. The poor economy and cost of living extending retirement. The fact that some people just can’t retire because they need the income. I don’t hear a lot about mental preparation for retirement. The mental preparation for retirement is just as important as the financial preparation. I see it too often where people retire and once the dust settles and the honeymoon is over they realize that they are bored out of their mind. Their bucket list is exhausted.
